Thanked: 4Hone Question
Hey guys well, I decided to take the plunge, and just picked up my C-MON Super XX, and a Flinn Flyer and am loving them. I do have one question however. I am looking to get a good hone, and am not sure what grit I should get. I have seen grits ranging from 100-8000. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thanked: 1212Hi, and welcome to SRP.
There are many threads about the different hones and brands.
A very recent one is here: http://straightrazorpalace.com/showthread.php?t=21838
You could run a search on the forum and dig up a full reading day of information.
Best regards,
Bart.

Thanked: 13245In general there are 3 different hone grit types for razors
1000-3000 Generally used to set a bevel on a razors edge
4000-8000 Sharpening grits
8000-16000 Polishing grits
And the 4th category, just for stupid sharp above 16k
What brand is all a matter of opinion, if you are going to be honing e-bay razors or doing a lot of honing you will want a stone in each of the 3 categories depending on what you are going to be doing you can eliminate some of the grits or even double up on them.... Also depending on the stones you might need a lapping stone or perhaps with some of the lower grit diamond stones it can serve a dual porpose...
This is basic breakdown, you can get as crazy about different hones as you can razors....
That C-MON XX is a great razor BTW have one myself...
Welcome aboard....

Thanked: 4Thanks for the welcome guys. I am looking at purchasing a norton 1000/4000 stone. Do you think that this should do, or would it be more beneficial to purchase a higher grit combo/

Are you restoring a blade or just touching up? If you are just touching up and are going to use the norton, I would suggest the 4/8k combo. Anything in the 1-4k range is alittle course and intended more for metal removal at a fast rate. Be sure to search the threads and do the home work before you buy. There is probably a ready answer to any question you might have if you check the appropriate threads. Enjoy yourself and good luck,

Thanked: 13245If you decide to go Norton there is a polishing combo deal out there that covers you fully for about $115
It comes with the 220/1000 & 4000/8000 & Lapping stone
This set up even lets you sharpen knives along with yer razors,
Want to take the honing a step farther add a 12k Chinese $35 and yer done and ready at about $150 total....Last edited by gssixgun; 05-22-2008 at 04:00 PM.
