Don't give up. Take the great advice all these guys have offered. Also read the great SRP forums-lots of good info. there. Your reward will be years of great shaves, a very enjoyable hobby and some super new friends.

Thanked: 735You are aware of the dangers of using a straight in the shower, right?!
You drop your M3 in there (unlikely anyhow, as they weigh next to nothing), and there is no harm done to you or the razor.
You drop your straight in there...I'd like you to imagine the first protruding piece of your, *ahem* "real estate" that a razor dropped from your chin will encounter..., and if it happens to miss Mr. Happy, there's a good chance of meeting up with Mr. Toe.
I used to use a wet/dry electric in the shower for years. I ceratinly enjoyed the full body scuttle experience. However, I now much prefer being on dry land, with dry hands, and a towel girding my loins when lathering up and shaving with a 3" open blade.
Just saying...

Thanked: 1I definitely agree. Of course I am aware of the dangers. I tried to shave outside the shower on dry land and my face just cant handle this type of shaving. I get more nicks and cuts this way and it just hurts. I tried to straight shave one time and I just felt and heard the hairs being cut off. My face looks better when I shave in the shower. I wont even use a mach3 like this. And honestly I have been thinking of this, about how much longer Im going to do this because I think at some point, anything can happen so its something Im going to have to think about if I really want to do this. I dont know how people do it honestly. No amount of hot towels makes it feel right either. I guess i'm too used to it. Ive been doing it since I first started shaving with a razor which was when I was 18, about 7 years ago.

Everything has already been covered here so I will only touch on the money issue: it doesn't matter.
I admit I have gone a bit overboard on hones, but only because I like honing and experimenting with stones. Not because I need them in the sense that I cannot go without them.
My strop is the practise strop that I got for free with my TM heirloom, which I sold when I had someone over who wanted to learn to use his straight. It was a great strop, but my rough looking practise strop works just as well.
My razors are not high end at all.
1 is the weltmeister that I bought before I found SRP.
2 is the John Barber I bought for 99ct, covered in rust and restored.
3 is the Joseph rodgers with massive honewear I got for free from thebigspendur because the edge was ruined.
All 3 can give me very good shaves.
I have also shaved with a 8/8 friodur, Joseph Rodgers razors or all types, wapienica, ... . and I have to say that shaving wise, there is very little difference if they are properly honed.
Some might keep their edge longer, and be a bit stiffer, but they won't magically give you a good shave.
It took me half a year on SRP before I finally got shaves that were really good and comfortable. Even now I still learn something new from time to time. Technique is everything.
The one thing I noticed most is that in the beginning it is easier to learn to shave with stiffer, heavier razors than with full hollows.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

No hull hollows are the thinnest razors of all. They usually have some flex in the blade because it is so thin.
Wedges are the thickest, ans are basically pie shaped with only the tiniest hollowing.
There are some diagrams showing the various grinds. Hang on. I'll see if I can find any.

Thanked: 1Yea full hollows look like a scoop and the wedge is flat. But most henckels ive seen (which are an example of a heavier blade) are full hollows. i really would like to get one of these and use that rather than my dovo 5/8 "classic black" which is 1/2 hollow. ive never shaved with anything else. i realize now that the stiffer ones are easier to begin with and you arent the first to mention it.
