    Default Hello world

    Hi,

Just wanted to introduce myself. I am a college student from denver but in minnesota for school. I first had a barber give me a strait razor shave in high school and it changed my life. I dont really have much of a set up currently. I got my great uncles razor a Kraut and Dohnal Barbers tip last year and started shaving, the razor is now back with my cousin as a graduation present. I have a crappy MenU shaving brush and well I am having trouble finding a good shaving cream, I still am using the can stuff I purchased at a flea market a 172 J.A. Henckels Solingen, it appears to have either an ivory or bone handle. I am currently using that as my shaver, but is still pretty dull since I do not have a strop and have been using newspaper because I am a poor student.

Welcome. Newspaper for stropping is certainly the least expensive means for stropping a razor out there; and, it's very effective. Many people through generations have used the belt they wore around their waist for stropping their razors. I guess my point is, if you are under a strict budget, don't dismiss the newspaper as a means for stropping a well honed razor.

Re: shaving soap. You'd be better off buying a cake of Williams shaving soap at a drug store and using any old reasonably large mug (picked up for a few cents at a thrift store or garage sale. A Tweezerman badger brush can be purchased for around $15. I bought mine at drugstore.com but I'm sure there are many other outlets.

That should get you going. Primarily you need to start this process with a razor that is truly honed to a keen shaving edge across the entire length of the edge. Then, even if it's not glamorous, you very well could maintain the edge of that razor on newspaper and maybe a bit of chromium oxide powder on the newspaper on occasion for months or longer.

My worries that the blade was shapened by a knife sharpener and I am not sure he went a high of a grit that is normally used in shaving. It can be at times a bit agressive of a shave.

I can only make assumptions, but if you had the razor sharpened by a knife sharpener, it's most likely not close to "shave ready" . I recall another member recently reporting that he took a razor to a knife sharpener and the results were very negative.

few edges require as delicate fine tuning as a razor's edge. You said you're going to school in Minnesota, we have members in the metro area, Randy Tuttle aka Randydance, for example in the metro area that I'm sure would be happy to hone your razor properly for a nominal fee.

Akady, welcome! The thread title makes me think that you're a computer programming major.

You'll definitely have an epiphany moment ("So *that's* what they meant by sharp!") if you can get that blade fixed up and honed by a honemeister. As was mentioned, see if you ca get in touch with RandyDance.
