    Default New member says hi!

My name is Bas, I'm 28 y/o and Live in The Hague, the Netherlands.
    I'm married and have 2 sons (11 months and 3.5 y/o)

I started shaving with a Wahl straight with disposable blades and a Gilette safety razor about a month or 2 ago.
I still cut myself regularly but it's getting better.
I bought a good straight razor yesterday and a strop and paste so I should really get it on now.
Onely problem with the razor was that, upon comming home, it was not shave ready. I contacted the store (barbershop suplly) and they told me to send it back and they will replace it with a sharp one or sharpen it. He thought it was already sharp. Ah well, people make mistakes.
So I'm now waiting for the new one to arrive. (it's a Gong btw)

I, for now, have a boarhair brush and use "vergulde hand" shaving soap.

I hope to learn a lot more here esp about the maintainance of the straigh on the strop and maby honing in the future

    than here's the first question.

I got the strop and yellow paste and just assumed I shoud put the stuff on the strop and rub it in.

    Was I correct?

    Hallo Bas,

Welkom bij SRP. Straights do not come shave-ready usually. I would NOT let a barber supply shop hone them unless you know they got a honemeister to do it for you. You better send it to a honemeister or learn how to hone yourself with a cheap and cheerful practice razor, crappy ebay special or whatever s.o. wants to part with.

You will find SRP a friendly community with plenty knowledge on straight razor shaving.

Is it a paste with or without polishing particles? IIRC the yellow paste is just some grease to keep the leather in good shape.

If it contains polishing particles it is not recommended for use on a hanging strop.

They also sell a Zeepk 7 day set which makes me wonder whether they REALLY know what they are doing.
