Thanked: 2204Just a note... DRY whiskers have the hardness of copper wire. So don't dry shave!

Good call, Graham.
It's in the Standardized Textbook of Barbering.
First pass with lather if the customer asks for the famous "Once-Over."
Second pass, against the grain, can be done with water from a bottle if the customer asks for a "Close Shave." Also, a second stropping is performed on the razor before beginning the second pass.
The clean-up mentioned in the original note is not a dry shave, but rather just a second pass.
A true dry shave would be dry skin with no prep. If you think this might work, all you have to do is try it once, and you will never do it again.

Thanked: 12Very interesting. So does this mean that old school barbers didn't lather on the ATG? When I clean up whiskers it isn't completely dry, my face is still wet from the shave and stray whiskers are still prepped for the shave. But this seems to be indicating that barbers used to use JUST water on the entire second pass.

I do it all the time. if your razor is sufficiently sharp, it's not a big deal.

Second Pass
I don't have the textbook in front of me, so my memory may not be exact, but I think the sequence was something like this:
1. Lather up the customer
2. Apply the warm towel over the lathered face.
3. Barber strops the razor while the customer is relaxing with the towel.
4. Barber removes towel re-lathers the customer.
4. Barber gives customer the "Once-Over" or first pass.
5. If customer requests a "Close Shave" the barber lathers the customer and re-applies the warm towel.
6. Barber strops the razor again.
7. Barber removes towel and uses water from a bottle to moisten the face and gives the AXG and ATG passes.
8. Barber then gives short facial massage while applying after shave lotion.
Kinda makes you want to go in for a shave, doesn't it?? Too bad hardly anyone gives this treatment anymore. It's amazing what we lost in the last 40 years.

I do it all the time as well. Really effective way to get hairs that almost seemed "too wet" initially to get caught by the razor.
