Default Best advice I ever got on straight shaving

I first tried a straight razor 25 or so years ago. A barber friend told me to hold the razor firmly enough not to drop it but loose enough that if it pulled it would give in my hand rather then cut me. I didn't know how to hone and gave up on shaving with straights up until a few months ago but I never forgot what the barber told me. It works for me and I rarely get a nick.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Great!! It always pay to listen to the older guys, they know what they're talking about, specially barbers.

Just finish shaving with a Jörcie #4 from Gernmany in 7/8 and must admit I got a BBS again.

The other important thing is to apply pre-shave cream or oil. I use Proraso pre-shave cream (smells like Noxima) and it realy does a difference. Never tried pre-shave oil but someone on this board once mentionneda brand like SafeShaver or something like that. If anyone can recal the real name would be appreciated or for that matter any good preshave product.

And one of the most important thing is WHATCH WHERE THE POINT OF THE BLADE IS AT ALL TIME. This will avoid cuts.

    Have a nice shave.
