Thanked: 0the newest guy here
So I am interested in this sraight razor business. I am the guy who likes to have things that will last a lifetime, then I won;t have to worry about it again. For example I own a Tilley hat because it has a lifetime warranty. My watch has a lifetime warranty. My jacket has a lifetime warranty. I think you get the hint. I also am about the environment lately and would rather not keep throwing all the cartidges and cans etc in the garbage. So I like the idea of a straight razor. My question is how long will one last/ Does the stainless stell last longer than the carbon. I am looking for the longest lasting razor I can find...less waste. I read so many of the newby stuff and the useful tips etc and am scared to crap about finding the right razor to buy. So many sizes and handles etc. 5/8 seems poplular. I m a big guy with a fat face. Can somebody steer me in the right direction. It would nice to be able to buy a complete set up....thanks
Bob

Thanked: 416Hey Bob, A good razor should last you the rest of your life and the lives of a descendant or two. Size is a personal thing But I recommend a 5/8 or 6/8 to start they give you better feed back than some of the bigger razors and are more nimble to use. Size of you face I never found to be a problem I am a big guy as well and have shaved with most of the sizes available without issue. Take your time and read as much as possible here before diving to deeply into the buying bug then post an WTB over at the BST section and you should be fine. If I can be further help drop me a Pm. Have fun and welcome to the SRP

Hi Bob! Welcome to SRP!!!
I would make the same recommendations that Doc made.
You asked about high carbon steel (HCS) versus Stainless. This is also a personal decision for folks. They both have the capability to shave equally well given appropriate honing, stropping and face preparation. For all intent and purposes, they will last the same amount of time - generations.
The HCS is a bit easier to hone than the Stainless. On the other hand, once you get a great edge on a stainless, it is possiblle that it may last longer before honings. Of course, the HCS will need to be protected from rust a bit more diligently.
I like both types but happen to have quite a few more HCS blades than stainless.
