Thanked: 0My 1st ahve! Woohoo!
I just had my first str8 shave yesterday and it was by far the best shave I have ever had. I was kinda surprised at how well it went considering I had no experience with it at all. Only knicked myself twice and one of them was on the chin, which i agree with what i have read. It is definitely tricky.
I genuinely look forward to shaving now. Its not just a dull duty that I have to perform every morning. I am already fighting the urge to acquire more shaving stuff.
I want to say thank you to everyone for all the questions asked and answered and a special thanks to Lynn for making that DVD. There is so much great information from the ppl here and it has helped me out so much.
One other question real quick...
I have a Norton 4k/8k and I was wondering if i can go from that to stropping and shaving or should I definitely get a finishing stone? Any advice I can get on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanked: 12Hello and welcome. Grats on your first straight shave, I'm glad it went well. You can go right from the 8K to the strop and still get a great shave. Finishing stones are nice but absolutely not necessary. They serve just to further polish and refine the edge and are really for those of us who are perfectionists. That being said its very nice to have one and would definitely recommend picking one up when it's right for you to do so.
You will absolutely need something to lap the 4K/8K though. Don't attempt to hone the razor prior to having the stone lapped.

Thanked: 0Thank u psdarby for the info. I also got the Norton Lapping stone to go along with my hones to maintain them. Now I just need to keep my eye out for a good deal on a finishing stone so i can have one of those eventually.

Seriously though, congrats on your first shave. I'm still waiting for my first shave with a real straight, hoping everything works as well as you.
