Thread: Razor Question. Answer please

I actually do not have a straight razor yet but I am planning on getting one. I know I need to buy a lot more than a razor but I still have some questions:

What straight razor should I buy? I want a good one but I also don't want to pay too much.

Are there any good websites to buy a good straight razor for a cheap price?

What are some tips I need to know when I learn to shave?

Are DOVOs the best brand? If so which model should I get?

To get answers to your questions start with the stickies at the top of the Newbies area. That will give you probably most of the info you need. As far as purchasing a straight. Keep your eye on the Classifieds on the forum. A lot of razors come through there. You can also post a WTB (Want To Buy) ad there and other members can let you know if they have anything that fits your requirements.

What you want is a shave ready razor. One that has been both honed and shave tested. That is primary. Razors from the factory are NOT! shave ready. Just ask anyone on these forums. Razors are denominated by the width of the blade. Historically the size 5/8" is the most common. It suits most beards. The exception is if you have a wire beard, dense beard or thick follicles. Then a razor with a stiffer grind will suit you better.
Your best bet is to go to the Classifieds and start your search there. Be patient and always ask questions of the seller. There is a comment field you can use or you can send them a PM

A DVD by Lynn Abrams, the founder of this website and a 30 year veteran of str8 shaving, is listed in the Classifieds. It is 3 1/2 hours of info on all aspects of str8 shaving. It will answer 90% of your questions. Buy it.

Dovo is the largest of the str8 razor mfg still in existence. Next is Thiers-Issard in France. There really is no "best" brand. One thing to stay away from is Ebay and the new razors listed there for a cheap price. Thanks this is a lot of help. I Can't afford it yet but once i can I will probably get a 5/8 dovo (not sure yet though). If you a prefrence to a spacific razor please let me know. -P

Many people have said that the "Dovo Special" is a great starter razor. It has a round point, faux tortoise scales, and, IIRC, it is a 5/8 full hollow. I would suggest you have yours professionally honed, as they do not tend to come "shave ready" and starting off with a great edge is very important. It should run somewhere aroud $100 new + shave ready.
