Poona - Honemiester in the UK
One of the most common bits of advice given to a newbie is to get your razor honed professionaly so you start with a good edge and have a benchmark of the level of sharpness to maintain.
I have just received back a razor from Poona this morning and the shave it gave me was outstanding.
The razor is a 6/8 Briedora I picked up on e-bay. I cleaned it up a bit myself but as my honing skills aren't yet perfected, I decided to send it to Poona for him to hone. Several days later, the razor returns and the shave it gave me was amazing. He had honed, stropped, cleaned and coated the blade with oil. Quality service.
I have a high end Dovo honed by Lynn and I can honestly say that in my opinion Poona's honing is comparable with Lynn's.
Newbies, you don't have to spend a fortune to get a really good sharp razor. For £25 I was able to buy a decent razor off e-bay and have it honed professionally.
Big thanks to Poona for an excellent service.

Thanked: 271I think it was a very good idea to let others know about the benefits of having your razors honed by someone who knows what they're doing. I would like to add that using the services of a professional honer is not just for newbies. I've been shaving with a straight for many years, touching them up with a barber hone, and there were just some razors that I didn't like because they didn't shave as well as the others. I just always assumed it was the razor. Well, my first razor, a Dovo stainless that I bought new in 1980, had developed corrosion around the pivot and had a lot play in it (blade hitting the scales, etc.) and was about to lose its center pin. I'm not handy so I was debating whether to just put it in a drawer and forget about or send it to be repaired. The problem was that it was a razor I never liked. Just for kicks, I decided to send it to moviemaniac in Austria. He cleaned, repinned and honed it for € 20 and I have to say that, now, it gives me excellent shaves, so it wasn't the razor after all. I also had a razor that I bought off of eBay that also never got sharp enough and he worked the same magic, just honing it for €15. A great job and great service.
I would heartily encourage anyone else who has had good results with a member's honing services to let everyone else know ... it can't do anything but good for everyone involved.

Chimensch, I agree it's a good idea to relay good service and experiences so other members can benefit and be aware of what's available out there.
I have tried honing a few razors and whilst I can get an edge that will shave, it is nowhere near as sharp as what an experienced honer can achieve. If it wasn't for shaving with a properly honed blade, I would probably have considered giving up straight shaving as I just wouldn't have got what all the fuss was about.
Like you say, it is relatively cheap to have a razor honed, but it is money well spent.
