    Default Question About Vintage Razor

Hi, I'm new to collecting vintage striaght razors, and the other day I bought a straight razor from a vendor at an antique flea market. They were having a half off sale and the razor was marked $7 so it was only $3.50. It's in pretty rough shape but the scales are definately bone or ivory. It passed the hot pin test, so it's not celluloid. My question is this, the blade says from what I can read "eorge & Son Sheffield, England"

I assume the "eorge" is George, but I can't find anything on the net about a George & Sons in Sheffield... I did see stuff on George Wostenholm & Sons in Sheffield, but my blade doesnt say Wostenholm... Can anyone clarify this?

    Thanks

    ^^Right on; they really would.

There are other Georges that were razor makers, but typically the last name also appeared. George Butler and George Savage are two others that I can think of off the top of my head. Though I think it's safe to rule out Savage, since they were only in production in the 1840's (or so I was told) and the word "England" was a recent addition due to tarrifs (or so I was told).

Okay, so before I post the pics, I want you all to know, this was a $3.50 razor! I know it's in really bad condition. I only got it because I noticed it was ivory or bone, and it was so darn cheap. I myself, don't shave with the razors, but I do collect them. Here's the pics.

Could be these guys at 147 Allen St. Shaw, George and Sons Britannia Metal Manufacturers appear in the 1854 Sheffield post office directory on page 7:

Post office directory of Sheffield ... - Google Book Search

Might not be them though, as it says they are metal manufacturers - but could be

    James.
