Thanked: 1Strange way of shaving
I've returned to the straight after 20 years absence and I hope you all don't find this anathema but- I shave first with a cartridge razor, then use the straight- i find it gives a beautiful close shave after getting rid of the real hard stubble with the cartridge razor. Is this a good use of the straight or am I being a wimp? I have a real thick hard stubble and I find that the cartridge razor works a bit like a 'pre shave'! What do you all think- is it just that my straight isnt sharp enough?

Thanked: 17Whatever works best for you... but I vote giving an all-straight shave another shot!

It could be that your straight is not sharp enough. It could also be a technique thing.
There has been some debate as to whether some people have beards that are too coarse or dense for a straight (or a particular grind), but I side with those who say that when properly honed and used a straight will shave anyone.

Just drop the newfangled thing for a while and go completely sraight and see how it goes, if its getting the stubble that the other leaves behind there should be no problem with it doing the entire task. And then you wont have to worry about being wimpy.
It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain

Thanked: 150I used to think I had a beard that just had to be pampered that the first pass was bound to be slightly uncomfortable no matter what.
But then I got a few really nice finishing stones, sorted through razors until I had found the very best shavers and am happy to report that a very comfortable shave can be had by those with super tough hair as well.
If you like you current method, then that's all that matter (but I suspect you want to drop the cartridge since you are asking a straight razor community which option is better).
So I say go for it.

Thanked: 1I would like nothing better than to use a straight and nothing else.
I do suspect its not sharp enough though.
This is where the dramas begin!!!!

I started with the straight 6 or 7 months ago. Though if you ask me I'd say 4 months because that's how long ago I put away the safety for touch up.
In my trials and tribulations the first pass has always been easiest, it's clearing the really tough ones left behind, difficult to approach grain directions that keeps me in front of the mirror

Thanked: 5Honnestly, does it matter? Are you satisfied with the results? Are you ok with the time, effort and expense that it involves?
I see no benefit in trying to argue with people to change their behavior if they are happy with the results.

I second the suggestion of sending you razor to Poona to hone. He doesn't charge much and it will be one of the best investments you make. Poona has sharpened several razors for me and he does a great job.
