Thanked: 0honing angle?
I wood carve and have a good amount of experience honing tools. How different is honing a straight razor? Is there a guide that is used to maintain the proper honing angle?

Thanked: 1212No, the razor just lays flat on the hone.
Due to the hollowness of the blade a razor has a fixed honing angle.
It can be altered slightly by adding layer(s) of tape to the spine while honing, but that's an advanced technique.
Best regards,
Bart.

One honing angle which it might benefit you to know is not in lifting the spine off the hone, but leading with the heel ahead of the tip in the honing stroke.
If you're familiar with honing wood cutting implements, I suspect you'll need to ease way off on the pressure you're used to using.
