Thanked: 0Can't wait to get started!
picked up a $20 Selective NY set of a strop and 2 razors off of ebay earlier in the week. You don't have to say it, I should have known. Ya get what you paid for Snaged a Norton 1000 and 8000 off ebay and found a Silver King for $18 at an antique mall yesterday I cleaned up. My Lynn Abrams dvd came yesterday which as everyone knows is very useful.

My questions are-
has anyone seen a king silver with black scales? I found a few white ones on the internet but they don't seem too common.
and
the edge on the silver king seems pretty good, however by no means can cut the hair test. Is my selective NY strop up holding me back or is it just the new guy syndrom? Or is it not possible to tell just from the internet? I can't get the Selective razors to get anywhere near as close as the sharpness of the SK. Haven't gotten my Nortons yet.

Thanked: 4942Definitely hard to tell, but it looks like you will want to make sure you even out the bevel on the razor and hone it up. One of the pics looks like there is a little corrosion in the edge as well that needs to come out. Once honed, shaving will be your best test.
Have fun,
Lynn

Thanked: 1903Further to Lynn's comment, I would like to add the following:
- Have the razor honed by a professional. Member Services - Straight Razor Place Classifieds has the whole shebang.
- A 1k and 8k Norton will not cut it. The following Wiki pages have the story:
Other than that, welcome to SRP. Enjoy your stay, and hold on to your credit card.Last edited by BeBerlin; 10-12-2008 at 05:58 PM.

Thanked: 0thank you both for your comments and help. I know I need more than the 1000 and 8000, a 4000 and polishing stone and better quality strop is on the list. The problem being I'm a full time college and EMT student, so money is holding me back just a bit. It's just a matter or time before I can get there. Until then I'm hoping to get by with what I have
