Thanked: 0Another Newbie takes the Plunge
Hello to all. I am another newbie who has been bitten by the straight razor bug. For a year or so I have mulled over whether to switch to the straight razor from disposables. Mostly because of cost but also as a tie to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is one of my favorite eras to study in history. Don't get me wrong I love my modern conveniences but wish that time moved a little slower sometimes.
I had been looking around on the internet a month or so and came upon SRP forum. This is truly an unbelievalbe forum filled with a vast wealth of information that will take years to adsorb. Thanks to those who created this forum as well as the administrators and moderators. Thanks as well to Kenrup for his Double Arrow beginners kit. I purchased the kit last week and received it Saturday (10/11). I also got brave and purchased a Boker King Kutter at an antiques shop. It looks to be in very good shape but I'll defer to an expert when I have it sent out to be honed. Gssixgun, I have you in mind since you are in Northern Idaho and are well regarded on this site as well as seeing your recent restore job on the Double Duck "Lifetime". Simply Fabulous!!
I tried shaving with the Double Arrow this Monday morning and results were not great but didn't go into it expecting to have a fabulous shave. Just wanted to try it! No nicks or cuts so that's a plus. Just need to keep plugging away at stropping technique and razor technique, etc. My next purchase will definitely be Lynn's DVD to see an in depth overview of straight razor shaving. An art and science to apply everyday! In closing thanks to all of you who offer your time and incredible expertise to those of us just joinning the ranks.

A hearty welcome aboard, Jim. I'm not sure you will really be saving any money. But it's a myth that we kinda believe in. Sounds like you are off to a fine start. Fantastic idea on getting Lynn's CD. It a great investment! You might want to consider getting a razor in the classfieds. Most are truly shave ready. When you start honing you will something to compare your edge against.

Thanked: 0Yeah, I can see where money savings won't be what I thought especially if I get into honing or restoring blades/scales. There are so many levels of appeal for me (throw away society, scientist/engineering backround, a sense of connection to grandfathers, etc) that it I'm suprised I hadn't jumped in earlier.

Welcome to SRP!!!
You did fantastic for your first shave.
You won't be sorry purchasing Lynn's DVD. It will be a great future reference for a host of things.
Glad you hear you are off to such a good start. Wish I had started out as well as you have.
