New old straight razor
So, I finally got my first str8 today... I got it from my college friend... It used to be his great-grandfather's who got it from ex USSR... There is little silver? rocket on scales in which is engraved: "PAKETA"... It has very rusty blade which has to be restored and properly honed... I was also thinking of making new scales, out of some dark wood (mahogany maybe)...
Pic is attached...
Anny opinion is welcome...
Thanks...

Its called the "Rocket" in english! Ive been wanting one to see how they shave, unfortunately with the amount of rust on your edge there might not be much razor left after cleaning and honing it up.
It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain

Well, now I see that the picture is taken at bad angle... There is much less rust on edge that it seems... I also measured the blade from top of the spine to the bottom of the edge and it looks like the blade is wider than common 5/8" blade... 5/8" would be 15,87mm, but my blade is 16,38 mm wide, so there is more than 0,2 mm steel for honing... I also decided to keep the scales as they are... Because, after all, it is my first straight razor...

Looks to be in pretty bad shape. Will be interesting to see how it looks when it is restored.

Well, first thing I did was cleaning the box with acetone and the engraving on the box is (transliterated) : BRITVA "RAKETA" or translated: RAZOR "ROCKET"... Yes, the year is 1963...
More progress will be made on Monday when I buy some tools for restoration...
And maybe I buy a honing stone (wetstone) to start developing my honing skills...Last edited by Robert1988; 10-25-2008 at 01:51 PM.
