Thanked: 0a few questions
I have a couple questions. My razors are a Shumate "Barber" razor, a Torrey Razor, and a Bowdins Wedge razor. All of which I have removed the rust and pitting from, and attempted to sharpen and hone them.
First off I am curious if someone can explain how a very fine (10,000 plus grit) stone feels to the touch. I have a Czech hone from my father that does not have the grit listed. It feels like glass when wet, and feels very fine. I am just trying to get an idea of what grit this stone could be. Currently I have this hone and a course sharpening stone, which makes getting a shaving ready edge impossible (or at least difficult). I will be purchasing a Norton combo hone to fill this gap.
Also I have a Illinois Strop number 6455, it says "Imported Genuine Shell" on it. Does anybody have any info on this strop, it seems quite old but in good shape.
Thanks for the info.

What your finger can feel has nothing to do with the grit of the stone. You will feel variations in texture on the level of at most parts of mm, while the cutting particles are two orders of magnitude smaller, even for very very coarse hones.

Thanked: 0How big are the cutting particles? What size particle's indicate certain grit ranges?
Thanks again.
