    Default more noob questions

ok heres the thing im 16 and have to shave about every other day or so. Iwould like to start using a straight razor but, my question is should i just jump right into it or should i start with a DE for now? i have only been shaving for about 9 or 10 months. A normal razor is just irritating to me and want to try something new

    thanks

    Smile Welcome, broox

There's no need to go the DE route. That's a different skill set. If you want to shave with a straight razor then just go for it. Do the research first and make sure you know what you're doing. Nobody wants to see somebody so young get hurt.

Read the stickies, the Wiki and the Help Files. There's lots of information on what good tools are and how to use them properly. Ask any questions you like bout the grey areas. there's always somebody here who's willing to help out.

    Welcome to SRP!,
i started wit ha straight when i started shaving decades ago... and am glad. however, you will need to realize that the start up cost is going to set you back $100US or more. and you will need more time to learn and maintain your edge than with any other method. if you are ready for the conversion then go for it... but first i would recommend you spend some time reading and viewing the tutorials if you choose the straightedge congrats... although you might find a number of other members recommending you start with a DE as they are easier on the budget and easier to explain to the parental units

please though ask lots of questions and try everything you can

that is a very nice starter set that can last you for years, except you will need to buy more soap..
i would recommend viewing Lynn's dvd a couple time before doing anything with the razor... and the really nice thing is that you will learn more each time you watch the dvd... good deal from a great vendor.

other places to look... vintage blades just make sure that you add the honing and get a copy of Lynn's dvd

and look in the classified for sets from kenrup he often has great starter set as well

    Welcome !!!

You have found a great place to learn and find all the help you need to get started. A good place to look is right here in the classifieds as well.

Main Index - Straight Razor Place Classifieds

One thing you will find is that most of the straights in the classifieds come freshly honed and truly shave ready. There are stops there as well as soaps and pretty much what ever you need and it can save you a lot of time and money.

I can also tell you it dident take me long at all to find that nothing is as satisfying and getting that close shave you get with a straight. A little patiance and practice will yield you a SWEET shave every time !

Good luck and stick around and keep us updated and dont hesitate to ask for help

    AND .... +1 on Lynn's DVD

If you go with the gift set from classic, I believe they offer a sharpening service. You may need to contact them if you go that route.

Otherwise, there are quite a few people here who will hone a razor for you. I think some people offer their services in the classifieds section of the forum.
