Glad to hear it's getting better...it's a process and has a definite learning curve...keep at it and you'll get very good faster than you thought possible.

Thanked: 0Wow...so much info..
What a great thread...I just got a razor from Don and tried it out...and to my surprise sooo much better than the vintange SR that I've purchased over the past few months. Chances are now I need to invest in a better strop than the one I got on ebay...sigh.
My question is...when you finish shaving how do you clean the razor? Wipe and dry...or more complicated?
I just want to say how awesome this site is and that my Sons are so intrigued that they want to try...so thank you thank you...

Welcome to SRP Ron (and sons!).
For drying the razor, I wipe it down with a towel being careful not to get too close the the cutting edge - I then, very lightly "strop" the blade on a towel to remove the water near the edge. Once that is done, I strop the blade on my strop about 15 times just to ensure that the edge is very dry. I then put the razor on my dresser, outside of the bathroom, in an open 90 degree position to allow it to air dry for at least a couple of hours.
No rust yet with this routine!
Hope that helps,
Mark

Welcome, Ron
1. I wipe the blade free of any soap water and whiskers with a towel, but not the cutting edge itself.
2. I clean the edge with a tissue soaked in rubbing alcohol in a stropping motion.
3. I strop the blade on leather for about 12-16 laps.
4. I let it air dry for about 10 min. before putting it away in a cedar box.
Some guys also cover the blades (or at least the edge) in oil to prevent any rust at all.

Thanked: 39I wash it off with water and then dry it with a towel carefully, and store it open for a 24 h. And i dont strop as according to razorcentral it breaks of the microscopic edge..i dont know it it really is that way but i thought why risk it?

Thanked: 39Lord no! Of course I strop, what I'm saying is i don't strop AFTER the shave only before, and only when the razor have rested for at least 24h.
I read my previous post now and you do get the impression that i never ever strop..but of course i do, it's one of the most important things you do in straight razor shaving.
But thanx for pointing it out so i can explain what i meant, an dont have to look crazyLast edited by Rawaz; 11-25-2008 at 01:57 PM.

Rawaz, if you do a search, you'll find an entire thread on whether or not to strop after shaving - it seems like there's no concensus on either side, but there are some VERY prominent members here both for and against. I personally fall on the side of stropping after a shave, just to make sure the bevel is extra dry. I don't believe that you will do any damage whatsoever, as there are also members who strop mid-shave with great results.
