proud to be a new member.is resting necessary?
hello everyone i had a question or two i bought a cheap razor off ebay (before i did research) it was a 440 stainless it was worthless so today a bought a dovo 6/8 red bismarck i my question is does a razor really have to rest for 24-48 hrs? or is this just a myth it dosent seem like shaving could change the molecular makeup of steel thanks in advance for any replies my new razor is supposed to be here on the 26th ill let everyone know how it goes thanks

Resting the steel is a myth.
Even though it is still spread today by no less an authority than the DOVO site itself.
Still just an old wives tale though.

I agree, just a myth as far as I'm concerned. I shaved with the same straight everyday for a while, with no negative results. I have a few straights now, but still just use the same one everday for a while. You'll be just fine with one straight if you plan on shaving everyday with it, if that's why you're concerned. I think most of the members want to keep the myth alive as an excuse to buy more razors!

P.S. Welcome to SRP and to the wonderful world of straight razors!!

You say that like it's a bad thing.
I started with 2 then 4 then... you get the picture.
A little while back I decided to go with one at a time for a week each to see if it changed things.
For me anyway what changed was that I got better at shaving with each razor as I didn't have 2 but a dozen or so. It was becoming interesting to get used to a completely different blade at 6am everyday. The key is to make sure you keep enjoying it so if the same everyday works then go for it.

Welcome, jszabo
I don't know if the whole "steel memory" is true or not these days, but it doesn't matter to me since I only shave about once every other day anyhow. I've shaved daily a few times with the same razor, no prob.

A strop substitutes well for resting. If I don't strop I have to let the razor rest, but I think the shave quality still goes down hill.

The old barbers used the same one all day long and then used it again the next day. No problem with one, it's just cooler to have more than one [50,100?].

I would say at a molecular level there probably is something to the resting theory, but for this mere mortal it does not make any difference. Only thing to keep in mind, if you do use the same razor every day for a few weeks, you will need a honing touch up, stropping will lose it’s effectiveness at that point.
