    Default What next..

Well.. I've been shaving with the shavette for almost two weeks now and its getting better and better. The next step would be a REAL straight but I'm wondering about what the next step should be.

I've already bought an ERN thats definitely not shaveready...its sharp.. no chips but a slight smile to it. so i'm pretty sure that it can be made shaveready.

these are the options I'm considering.
1-Buy a Hone and a strop and see if I can hone the ERN to shavereadyness (in the meanwhile shave with the Shavette and compare it with that for sharpness)
2-Buy a Sraight from the classifieds and a strop.. buy a hone later(in about three months) to see if I can hone the ERN to shave readyness and keep the other straight sharp.
3-Send the ERN to get honed, buy a strop and buy a hone later (in about three months) to keep it shaveready.

Is there somebody in europe I can send the ERN to?

I would choose option no 3, thats also what I did. I dont know how the shavette is but I can imagine there is a difference between a sheveready straigh an the shavette.

About honemeisters in Europe there is Klaus from Austria in the classifieds member services section. But I dont know my self how good he is. But you could definitley send it to Lynn in Amreica as I did, and I live in Sweden, it was no problem for me. However it does get a bit more expensive and take longer time due to the shipping. But definitly worth it!

I would chose option 3 because it's the least expensive. Send the ERN to get professionally honed and in the meantime, pick up a strop.

Also, because you are going to wait to get a hone, you might want to pick up some chromium oxide as it will extend the life of your edge and give you more time before needing to hone. You can get some from Chris L for $5 shipped I think.

When you do buy a hone, I recommend that you practice honing with an inexpensive razor.

I found out there is a fourth option...

4-buy a shaveready razor from the classifieds, get the ERN honed as well and buy a strop.. it buys me more time to buy a hone and learn to use it....

is this a mild case of RAD?

I chose option 1 when I was in your position and it worked out okay for me, but I enjoyed the challenge and the learning curve (picked up some practice razors first) and I got lucky with some nearly shave ready purchases. I also chose option 2 and got a couple of honemeister honed blades. What I learned from that was not only what a shave ready razor felt like, but that I like to push it just over that line to super sharp. the edge doesn't last quite as long, but the way it cuts my beard is great.

Obviously, moviemaniac: Member Services - Straight Razor Place Classifieds

My local shop also hones razors, and they do an excellent job at it. I think the price they charge is 15-20€: Herzlich Willkommen! - The Different Scent: (German language only).
