Thanked: 0Great Lather or just hype?
I've been working at this for about a couple months now and slowly starting to get some good info and got my first great blade..."Thanks Don A".
Now I've been doing probably what I shouldn't do and that's read countless pieces of information about this great art. So now we come to the point about lather...
I came across this site...
Moss Scuttle has arrived!! « Later On
Any input?
Thanks

If you like nice warm lather on all the passes you do it is a great invention. Of course there are ways to improvise things that work just as well for less cash outlay and several threads about doing just that on here. The Moss Scuttle itself has evolved some since that article was written with a couple of different size options for guys with differing brushes or tastes.

The Moss scuttle is great for parking your brush to keep the lather warm after you've made your lather elsewhere. If you prefer to make lather in a scuttle, go for the Georgetown Pottery scuttle. It's discussed ad infinitum in the Brush/Mugs/Stuff forum.

I'll start by disclosing my personal bias - I own a GP scuttle. I think it's great to make lather in because it's big enough (but not too big) and has a ridged bottom to really aerate the lather. The Moss scuttle, from what I understand, is only intended to keep lather warm.
But you don't need a scuttle...a soup bowl will work just as well...but darn, that warm lather sure is nice!

scuttles are nice, but they're not for everyone. if you wanna try one without the hefty initial investment, check this out:

not as nice, but for 6 bucks you're not out a lot of money if you wind up not liking the scuttling experience.

Thanked: 351As far as your *lather* goes, the Moss scuttle won't make any difference shave wise. It will keep your brush/lather warm if that's the way you like it. I consider such a thing a luxury item... if you'd like to keep your brush/lather warm and you have the money to spare, I can't think of a nicer way of doing it.
I don't own a Moss scuttle, I have a ceramic pinch bowl from a resturant supply house, it's a small dish, just the right size and shape to build lather in. I also have a narrow deep round bottom mug without a handle (I have no idea what it was meant for originally, but for a dollar at a local flea, why not) and it's where I soak my brush in hot water and ends up as the inner bowl in a redneck kind of scuttle as posted above. I rarely bother though... I normally just whip on the lather on my face, place the brush handle down on the counter and shave.
