i would just like to say thank you again for all the much needed advice on what to do with my first set of razors. a little back ground on why i posted this thread: im planning on buying myself a little x-mas gift (DOVO bismark) and i would like to have some cheaper straights to practice my honing and stropping on so i dont screw up something i paid a lot for haha.

Just a clarification - 'sterilisation' is achieved by the use of heat application, usually done in an autoclave, though it can be achieved in a pressure cooker. I forget the exact times required but they can be looked up online. Chemical products do not sterilise, they disinfect - same result, different method. Although there is very, very little chance of catching anything from a blade that has been lying in a drawer for fifty years, working on a recently-used blade is different. I use barbicide as a rule, observing the hospital strength solution ratio and dwell time. There are also many products in the pro cleaning field that will kill HIV, HEP B/C, listeria, pneumococca in general, MRSA, C. dificile etc etc etc. ANother good one is good old 'Milton' fluid. Basically weak bleach, this kills ever bug imaginable yet is very mild (after all it's used to disinfect baby's bottles.)

Of course, you could always wear Kevlar gloves...................
