Default First post, and have yet to shave.

    Hi,

Newbie here, never have shaved with a straight yet. I just ordered my first razor, brush and strop. I've always wanted to try straight shaving but was discouraged by my father. But afer looking around this site and some of the sponsor sites I decided I have to try it. I ordered a new Dovo Ebony 5/8 spike point shave ready, along with a Sirvertip badger brush with cocobolo handle from Stephen's Woodworking and some Truefitt & Hill creme from Straight Razor Designs. I ordered the strop From Classic Shaving. I'm really looking forward to the experience. I've always loved knives since I was a kid so this seems natural to me.

I'd like to thank you all for the advice I've read throughout this site.

    Jason

    Thanks Dannyr,

I never thought Id' actually look forward to shaving....

One thing I forgot to ask, is there anything I need to do to the strop before the first use? It's an Illinois #835.

Hi Jason and welcome to SRP.

You shouldn't need to do anything to your strop to start with. It may need some leather conditioner or the like after some time and many uses, just to keep it supple and stop the leather drying out, other than that you are good to go.

Hey Jason. Welcome to SRP! Using the straight is a great experience, and a great method of relaxing. Take your time and don't gret too frustrated, and always remember to take all of the advice that you get on here with a grain of salt. Some of these guys, although full of heart and purest intent, are really really insane. Not kidding . . . ok ok I am kidding. But don't get overwhelmed with information. There is a lot if it here. And take your time to paruse the Wiki, a great majority of questions that you have will be answered there.
