Thanked: 0a few questions
hey guys i'm a newbie. i recently inherated some razors and stones. the writings on the stones are hard to read. one seems to say "american (can't make out) quality". the other says "franz swaty" and some other words i can't make out. would you guys have any info? also the razors are in pretty good shape except for some rust on one. what might i do to clean them up? i enclosed some pics. thanks guys

The Swaty's are in demand. They command high prices.
You might want to post the razors on the Workshop forum. You'll get the advice you need there...

The Slate backed stone...
might be a Coticule. Very nice stone for honing razors. The restore guys will want more detailed shots of the razors before going to far with advice. It looks like one might be a frowning blade and one might have rust or corrosion on the edge. These would be serious problems. Again, hard to say with out close up pics...

Thanked: 13245From the pics I see, the two on the left look ok except the heavy toe hone wear... Top right looks real good, and the GoldEdge I would put on a hone before I tried anything else to see how deep the rust goes into the edge....
And as Rob already stated better pics would yeild a better opinion...Last edited by gssixgun; 12-15-2008 at 11:42 PM.

Wotup & welcome wuddup77.
Looks like you have inherited some quality stuff there. If you have some experience working with steel you could swat up on the resto wikis etc and go for it but otherwise prolly best to enlist the services of one of the restorers here.
There is no simple 'cleanup' but at least oil the blades to halt the rust. The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

Thanked: 1212That yellow hone, with its slate back is almost certain a Belgian Coticule, and it looks like a very decent size.
Welcome to SRP,
Bart.

The one on the right above the Goldedge might be a Klass Kissing Cranes. They are a good razor too. The Belgian coticule looks like a beauty. The barber hone that says " American" may be an American Razor Hone product. They made one stamped American Swaty. I would bet that stuff was once owned by a professional barber. Great stuff. Welcome to SRP.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 0as a matter of fact the stones and the razors were owned by a barber. i'm a barber myself and in new york state we're only allowed to use shavettes.we just shave the neck and sideburns.
