First Blood!
Been shaving straight for a week or so now and got my first bleeder just under my chin. Tiny little thing, but it bled surprisingly well.
Here's hoping it scars up nicely so I can wear it with honor
And here's hoping that dumb styptic pencil shows up in the mail already!

i had the same experience after a week or so i started trying to shave faster and started nicking my face up but i have tried to slow it back down some after all it is a very enjoyable thing why rush it it seems like second nature to shave as fast as possible so sometimes i have a hard time trying to slow down

I'm about to start shaving with a straight razor soon -or at least I hope.
I will be super slow I'm sure as I don't want to cut myself too deep lol... I don't care about little nicks here and there.
Once I start, I will share my experience.

Not to worry, Tyler. Sometimes I knick myself and don't know it until later. Yeah, they are pretty sharp. In time your skills will develop, and you will get more effiient. But, you've already taken the first steps@ Congrats!!

An old barber told me to hold the razor securely but lightly enough so that is if it pulls the razor will flex in your fingers and be less likely to cut. He also told me to never force it if it does pull. Following that advice I have rarely gotten a nick.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Fair enough, but I ordered a bunch of stuff from Classic Shaving and cheap as a styptic is, I don't feel the need to buy 2. Especially as I'm choking at the 1-2 punch combo of a razor and strop.
Someone once told me- never buy something just a bit cheaper than what you really want, because in the end, you'll wish you had just gotten the more expensive one. The bastard talked me in to a 50" plasma, and I love him for it.
So I think I'm just going to go for it and just get a nice new one. Not going to risk screwing up a beautiful vintage razor with my sub-par honing skills, but that way I'll have a nice razor that I won't have to replace, and it'll encourage me to stay in the hobby.
For my first true straight: Dovo Ebony "Silver Steel", 5/8" Carbon Steel- finger trembling over the "buy" button.
maybe I'll sleep on it.

I got a vertical cut under my sideburn my third time shaving, tried XTG
What I like about razor-cuts is how fast they heal, it was totally healed in 3-4 days.
