Thanked: 0A noo noob for your entertainment!
So, hi! I'm 24, and tired of buying Mach 3 cartridges (that and Wal-Mart just raised the prices again!), and I'm looking into getting a straight razor. The barber shop here in town has a few, and they use them on the back of the neck when you get a haircut, I've never felt a shave so smooth. I've read all the guides out there (I think) and I'm getting ready to buy a razor and all that within the next month or so. I figure I'll get two razors, a cheaper one and a "good" one, and practice honing the crap out of the cheapy before I get going with the good razor. Good plan?
Anyhoo, just wanted to say hi, I'm sure I'll be dropping in with more questions as time goes by.

Sounds like a great way to start. Try to make sure the cheaper one isn't a Zeepk or similar. i.e. the Zeepk is so bad it isn't worth practicing on.
Welcome to straight shaving and have fun.

Welcome to SRP!You are entering into a fun and rewarding new (hobby, discipline, skill). They don't use us newbs as entertainment.Rather they enjoy helping us get on the right track about all this. The only foolish question is the one you didn't ask. Also, hope you don't think you'll save money by starting straight shaving. While it's possible to stay on a budget,it's quite addicting wanting to always try the things you read about here and chasing that ultimate shave.

A suggestion if I may, buy one good razor from the classifieds here, that will insure you have a good razor that is shave ready, secondly purchase a double arrow from Stamps 222 on ebay(10$) and learn to hone on that.
It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain

QFT!!! You can get a great shaver in shave-ready shape pretty inexpensively here.
Then, get that Double Arrow, they are really inexpenive, but take a great edge.
Another option is to buy the Double arrow shave ready, learn on it, then when it needs a touch up, you know whether you like straight shaving already, only bought one razor, and have a perfect one to learn to hone on...and then you can buy a new nicer razor, or one off the classifieds.
Have fun, ask questions. The learning curve is there, but with some care, it can be fun, (pretty) blood and pain free, and within a few weeks, you will wonder how you ever shaved with the can and cartidge.
