I'm still very new to this - just had my fourth straight shave and definitely still learning - but I got a spike because I thought it would be better around my moustache, specifically underneath it at the sides of my mouth. After ordering it, I read somewhere in the wikis that a spike would be better for a moustache and then various posts in the forum about how spikes were more dangerous for the newbies. I haven't tried a round point so I can't make that comparison but a spike is definitely a lot easier than a DE to get into those under-tache areas. And so far I haven't caused myself any damage with the point at all. I read somewhere here that if the point is causing you grief, you can blunt it slightly on some cork so that it doesn't nick so easily but it's not a problem I've faced so I haven't tried it.
