welcome to srp. my first razor was a wapi and i still like it more than some of my other razors (just need to hone it up again). you should have no problem learning on it. for soap i recomend something from mama bear at Mama Bears Soaps , Mama Bears Shaving Soaps and Bath Products for the Discerning Gentleman and Lady i have yet to get a bad one.
