Thanked: 0Trying to a first straight razor for my husband
Hello,
My hubby started going to this place Hawleywoods that offer straight razor shaves and he fell in love. So for his birthday I'm trying to get a good reasonable straight razor that he can set started on. Also looking for help in the rest of the accessories too? Something about honing and stropping and cream and stuff? Don't want to get a bunch of stuff that is a waste of money or overspend either. Thank you guys for any help you can give me!!

Thanked: 2209Look in the classifieds section here for a vintage razor that has been cleaned and honed. Be sure to ask the seller if it has been shave tested.
You might also find a strop there or look in the Vendors Corner forum.
A strop is a necessity BTW.
Use a good quality shaving soap or cream. They make a huge difference in the shave. Classicshaving.com is a good starting point.

Hi and welcome!
My 2 cts:
1. get a shave-ready razor either from classicshaving.com or the B/S/T forum
2.get a Tony Miller strop: The Well Shaved Gentleman, Heirloom Razor Strop Company, Straight Razor Shaving Supplier
3. get Lynn's DVD
4. get a good brush and some proper shaving soap or cream, no spray canister goo!
As soon as he gets the hang of it you will have a smoother hubby forever!

Hello FunLovn,
Welcome to SRP! All of the advice above is good. For a piece of mind click the Wiki tab under the Straight Razor Place name on this page headder. Read the razors to avoid. It also has a list of good razor brands to start with. Can't go wrong with a brand in the suggested list as a starting point. Also, if you post you town/city and ask for personal assistance I'm sure someone would be happy to meet with you and/or your husband. Sometimes you can retain more that way and have a better understanding as to why.
Good luck.“If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got.” (A. Einstein)

Of course, let him look at the DVD after he gets all his goodies. It will help him immensely too. Big learning curve even when you have the right toys.
