It Can Only Get Better... I Hope
There's nothing better than that very first stoke with your very first SE. Down the left cheek, small strokes, this is pretty easy. The left side goes very well. The right side a little more difficult but still much easier than I expected. It's not bad at all. Then, the evil chin!
I'm not sure how to describe it except to say that I actually had blood dripping in the sink. I thought if you nicked yourself it was supposed to be small, thin paper cuts. NOT...
But, I patched myself up (15 minutes of bleeding), re-lathered and did the second over. And, to prove I'm just macho and not totally stupid, I did NOT do the chin on the second over. Of course, it would have been tough going over those bandages.
Now for the real sick part. I can't wait to do it again.

Hang in there it will get better. For my first couple of weeks I used my DE to do the chin, mustache and parts of the neck. If your razor wasn't truly shave ready it will be tough to do the chin. Then again it may be a technique issue. Stretch that skin and go light with short strokes. Read my sig for some good advice on avoiding nicks in the future.

Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Things will absolutely go better in the future.
In spite of the fact that I usually adhere to the "Run with the big dogs or stay on the porch" mentality I would suggest staying away from the moustache/goatee area until controlling the straight becomes more natural feeling. It happens pretty fast and why suffer in the meantime?
Good luck, and let us know how it is going.
