Thread: disposable blades

hi lads,
why have disposable straight blades ?
what is the point of having them would a de razor do just as good a job (confused)

real straight is the only way to go in my opinion

My first razor was a disposable straight. It was $5 at the store so I bought that to see if I would like it. I keep it as a back up, as I only have one blade now. It comes in handy.

But I agree with jazabo. A real straight is the only way to go!

Well, a disposable blade straight comes in handy for travel and is still a straight. Which is far far different from and doesn't do at all the same job as a DE.

Thats like saying why wet shave an electric is just as good.

Disposable straight blades are held at a different angle for the cutting stroke and the resultant cut whisker feels softer.

So without all the other arguments, the advantage of the single disposable straight is that it will provide a smoother feeling shave.

This said, it harder to learn how to use it than a twin blade disposable and the shave takes a little longer.

Thats about it.

My first str8 was a disposable, total investment was four bucks. For me it was a training razor to see if I really wanted to try this. In the end, I was convinced that it str8's were the way to go for me. I suspect others used this same logic.
When I worked at a gun shop I was surprised by how many people couldn't sharpen a knife to save their lives. I was shocked how many of my coworkers didn't know how to sharpen a blade.
From that I would assume many people are intimidated by the idea of honing a razor. So the disposable fills that niche.
I managed to get over a month out of my first blade, with stropping. For S&G's I honed that blade the way I did my others, and was shocked at how much better the results were. Better than out of the box.
