Smile Introduction and vintage razor pics!

    Hey all!

I'd like to thank you all for the fabulous community you have here. This place is a great resource for people that are new to straight razors (like me).

I've been interested in shaving with straight razors for a while, but it wasn't until I got one as a christmas gift that I made my mind up to give it a go.

(I hope the images are working...I'm uploading them to imageshack...)

Here's what I got for christmas:

    C.V. Heljestrand No 24

The blade profile of the 24.
Does anyone know if this would be regarded a "half hollow" blade?

After getting that for christmas, I was kind of bitten - even though I hadn't even attempted to shave with it yet. I went to an antique shop to look for more, and I found quite a few - in varying conditions. But then, in the darkest corner of the shop, I found this:

C.V. Heljestrand No 31, in dead mint condition.

The model number. Sorry about the fingerprints!

The blade profile. Is this a full hollowing?

So far I've shaved twice - once with each. First time (with the 24) was a bit nervous, and I made a few nicks on me, but I was rather happy with the result anyway. Second time (with the 31) was much better! Once I got confident in moving the blade, I discovered that this kind of shaving is a lot more pleasant than with cartridge razors.

Thanks for reading and looking! I hope someone can clarify the degrees of blade hollowing for me.
    Best regards!

    Welcome Sunbane!

    I would place the 24 as a quarter-hollow, there's too little hollowing to be a half-hollow.

There are many degrees of hollowing that could be called "full hollow" as you can see on this chart. The second I'd place a little above a typical fully hollow blade.

Hello Sunbane and welcome to the forum.
I have a pair of #24 Heljes and like them much. Really great shavers and great steel.
For your grind questions check out this chart from wiki. It helps a lot.

Edit: Sorry, my damn network was so slow that it showed the Lordkappa's image a little late
    anyway, the same one. LOL

    Smile Welcome, Sunbane

I'll say quarter hollow on the Heljestrand as well.

Welcome to SRP ! Here is some good reading and here are videos. Nice starter collection you have there.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Haha! I had a feeling someone would comment on that!
It's not me in the avatar, but I have to admit I'm sort of jealous of the guy's beard.

He seems pretty hardcore too. "Yeah! Bang that head and rock out, gramps!"
