Thanked: 2Greetings
Greeting from a former lurker.
I recently was given a straight from a friend. It is a BUD-K stainless that she bought from amazon. I've not heard the company mentioned here. It definitely needs a professional honing, for which it will be sent out soon. My issue with it is that it is heavy and seems huge compared to the pictures if seem in the classified section. Has anyone heard of the company? I still have not figured out how str8s are measured. I'd appreciate a point in the right way. Thanks

I have not heard or read about Bud-K razors so I can't help there. What town/city in upstate NY are you located in. There are a bunch of us around that may be able to meet w/ you. Professional honing is the best way to go for a newbie.

Thanked: 2Thanks, but I think I've found some answers. BudK appears to be a Hunting knife, fantasy edged weapon catalog company. And according to the info on this site identification the str8 I have is either a 13/16 or 7/8.
I'm almost on the Mass boarder. Albany is the nearest city of merit.

Bud -K sell Kriegar & Timber Rattler razors in their catalog. If that's what you have they're actually in the 'razor's to avoid list' here

Thanked: 2Thanks for the link. Well, even if it is a razor to avoid, I guess it could be used as a honing trainer. I won't have to worry about ruining it. I searched amazon and think i found the listing here Amazon.com: Natural Wood Straight Shaving Razor: Sports & Outdoors.
I guess I'll have to find something else for which to start properly. I've seen some used straights on eBay go for under $20. I'm assuming that event if such a razor needs some TLC and a refurb, it would be better than the heavy monstrosity I have now.

Have you checked the SRP classifieds, there are some great razors for reasonable prices!

I’d hesitate to spend money to have it honed – I can’t say it is unsharpenable because I have actually had experience with that brand, but the Krieger and Timber Rattler company it keeps is not a good sign. Also, don’t drive yourself crazy trying to learn honing on it. The stainless is probably so low grade that it will crumble before it will sharpen, an expert would be fighting a losing battle. You may be doing everything right, other than beating a dead horse. Get a cheap vintage with a good reputation, go back to the BUD-K as a challenge later on.
