Thanked: 12maintance
I did some looking at didn't see much on the subject. I might have 2 razors instead of just one. If that is the case what should I do with the "second when not in use to prevent rust?
Next question I understand to strop before each use, but how often does the blade need to be honed? The razor came with some green cromium 2 paste, how often should that be used? (I will either buy a make another strop for this purpose.)
Thanks in advance

For razors that aren't being used, just put on a little light oil. I'm sure any kind will work, I use a little mineral oil on my razors that aren't being used. It's cheap and comes in a big bottle from the drug store! As far as honing goes...there's isn't a definitive answer on that one. It really depends on razor use and beard type. I would say for a daily shaver expect maybe a month or two before it has to be re-honed?? That's a huge ball park, I'm sorry I couldn't be more specific. And for the strop paste, only use it when the razor isn't quite sharp enough, apply it and strop on it very sparingly, like 5-10 strokes. Is it the dovo green paste or a chromium oxide paste? It makes a big difference, the dovo green paste is much coarser than chromium oxide, so I would check that out first.
I hope I helped answer some questions! Happy shaving,
Dave

Hi eernest. I don't remember if I welcomed you to SRP so Welcome.
To prevent rust wipe the blade dry after use. Some here strop 10 or so times to help dry. Wipe with Alcohol and leave open for a while, at least 15 minutes. Store in something like a tooth brush stand that is open and the air can circulate around the straight. A light coating of mineral oil is also used by many. I have found that when my blades are stored in a confined place like a china cabinet they rust faster than the ones I leave in an open room. I did store some in an old cigar box in a draw for numerous years and they didn't rust.
No need to hone or use paste until you notice your shaves getting rougher. Most here say that depending on your beard and stype anywhere from a few weeks to a few months before honing or pasting. Also, some say that after several months of stropping on paste a hone should be used.“If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got.” (A. Einstein)

Hi there Errnest.
I agree with using a little oil against rust but I only use paste as a final polish post honing.
Honing is really something you do only as needed & that may be 5 strokes to refresh an edge or 100's to repair damage.
Plain stropping is my idea of maintenance. The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.
