    Default I bought 3 hones.

Hello forum, I recently purchased 3 hones. I have the following "Ahconite" "Tonsorial gem" and a "Carborundum" These are very old but in very good shape. I would like to know which is the best they all seem good. Almost forgot. Two of them have a double side and two of them come with instruction and one doesnt. One side is blue and the other side is brown. and one of them is all grey which is the "Carborundum" its seems coarser but not by much. And I know it depends on the razor or metal to be used on the hones is this correct? I have 2 razors one is a wostenholm and sons ixl and the other is a "Kanton: forged and ground in sheffield.
the Kanton is what I use now. Which stone is recomended?

    Default barber's hone

For touch ups the finest stone you have is best. I agree that the Carborundum is a little coarser but have regularly shaved with the edge off of one. the tonsorial gem might be the best listed IMO.

you might want to lap them flat with with sandpaper on a granite or marble tile... or a coarse DMT hone before entrusting your razors to them.

expect to use considerably more than the 3-10 laps frequently listed in the instructions.

    have fun and experiment!
    Be just and fear not.
