Thanked: 1Hey there, A newbie checking in.
Hi, my name is Jonah and I stumbled across this forum. A long time ago I was given a straight razor several years ago, but I was in the navy, and not allowed to use it. Unfortunatly I misplaced it. I am looking at getting back into this, as I have read most of the wiki and taken a good look at this forum. One question I was looking for but didnt find was, how much would a basic setup be? I'm, looking to get a cheap startup for now. I'm thinking one razor, a brush, and a strop to start out with. maybe a cheap razor off of e-bay to practice honing. oh, and how can you tell a real solingen from a fake?

Check with Kenrup for a setup or the classifieds here @ SRP and put your own setup together, or you could check out the vendors here, all good people!
It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain

Welcome Jonah.
Depends on what you want for your 'basic setup'. Honed razors seem to be $40 and up, strops $20 and up, brushes $5 and up, soaps $2 and up, so the minimum would be something around 80.
A hone for your ebay razor would be another $75 (norton 4000/8000).
Not sure about real vs. fake solingen, I guess if you go for the vintage ones the chances of being fake are not all that high. After all somebody has already shaved with those used razors, so they can't be all that bad.
