The sharpmaker has recesses in the base to hold the stones in with the flat surface up. It also allows the stones to be placed next to each other for an effectively wider hone. The base (with the cover installed again) can them be laid on a table or held in your hand.
I would think a really light touch would be needed as well with the stones in this configuration. A gap is still present when laid next to each other, and some have criticized the stones' triangular shape for having high spots (possibly mitigated by thorough lapping?) that can chip a delicate razor's edge.
