Thread: First Shave

Just did my first shave!! I was nervous as hell putting that blade to my skin but managed to get through it. Used a Dovo 5/8 from classic shaving. Most of the shave was spotty at best. The sideburn stroke was the easiest and I pretty much couldn't muster up the courage to try the chin. Got through the stroke for under the jawline but still am not quite comfortable with how to get the jaw.

Yes I looked at all of the instructions and pictures here and elsewhere...still don't get it. I think most of it was a comfort factor thing. I took my time and had to lather several times but I loved the experience. Have to tell you spend on the brush. I first had a bristle brush and it sucked....bager hair brush made great lather.....

Left the hair I couldn't get and will keep on going at it...this is a slow process.

Well done on getting through it! Don't try anything too awkward for a couple of weeks & give youself time to get used to handling the razor. As you become more proficient you'll find yourself more confident & gradually be shaving the lot! The chin will take you a while to master, but you'll get it with peristence!

If it is any consolation, your story is pretty much par for the course. I would not worry that you are somewhat uncomfortable going beyond the cheeks. Focus on this area for a while until you gain some confidence and refine your technique a bit. Don't rush it. Enjoy the journey!

Congrats!! Don't worry about the other areas of your face. Take your time and get comfortable with the razor in your hands and against your face. It will come. In no time you will be getting that coveted BBS!

I had my first shave at the beginning of December & when I first put the blade to my face my hand started shaking. Just take your time & go at your own pace. I wish I would have started years ago. It's so enjoyable after a stressful day at work to relax & have a shave. Good luck,defiantly you'll get it sooner then you think-!!

Congratulations on your first straight shave..

After a short while you will be comfortable with your straight and your shaves will improve quite a bit...

+1, once you get the cheeks down to the jawline use the non shaving hand to pull up on the cheek which will pull up the the skin under the jaw to where you can easily get to it. As for the chin or any contour of your face, break those contours into small flat planes and shave accordingly. Hope this helps.

Thanks...no worries though I am hooked. It only took two good strokes to reinforce this was the right way to go. I'll keep working at it till I get comfortable with the blade. Next stop...the strop.
