    Default Shaving head

    Hello all,
I've been shaving my head with a safety razor for 10 years and I want to try a straight razor.
Does it matter what kind of straight razor I use? I saw a video of a guy doing it, I think on this site, and Im sold.

i don't know, but do a search and find who does it, may be easier than waiting for them to stumble on your thread - that's just because those guys are a minority so the chances are smaller.

btw Jimbo is one of them.

    Welcome

I think any straight would do, as long as it is decent quality and shave ready. Although perhaps to start I would not try to use a big 8/8 wedge, for example.

Get used to how to hold and manipulate a straight before putting it on your head. I do not know if you have prior experience shaving with a straight or not, but if you do not please take that advice.

If you need any help, feel free to ask. We are a helpful lot here!

I too am a head shaver. I do a WTG and a ATG on my head. I lather up and go the first pass as I would comb my hair. The second I do by feel. The razor needs to be really keen. streach the skin from the top of the scalp. I find the need to hone more often. You will cut yourself learning to navagate your head. And I find behind the ears to be the most difficult. And what Jimbo said. I use what ever razor I pick up but find a 5/8 or a 6/8 to be good for me. any specific questions?

do you just use one mirror or do you have more to see the back and sides better? I shave my head and would like to get a head str8 shave... Hell my face hasn't felt better before I started shaving with a str8.

I don't use a mirror to shave my head. I go by feel.

    Smile Welcome, greenlantern

    Glad you could make it.

If you're real nice and you sweet talk him a little, Jimbo might point you to his head shaving vid.

Sal - I'm with Don on this (actually, I agree with Don on everything - the man does ATG on his head!! ): I go by feel also on the back of the head. Really, I think that is the only practicable way to do it. Secondary mirrors may work, but positioning them and getting used to looking at a reflection within a reflection just sounds like more trouble than it is worth to me.

There are some things you can do to make your life a bit easier in that area though. My biggest concern when I first started was, believe it or not, making sure I did not leave little strips of hair down the back of my head. To aid with that, I have found being very systematic is the only way to go - when I re-lather to do the back of my head I make sure to lather back up on top of my head a little so I can keep track of where I have been with the razor.

Also, to aid not scalping yourself down the back of the head, you can for most areas still see the scales in the mirror, if not the blade. Watching the scales as you do the back of the head is, I have found, quite a good way to keep track of both the blade angle and the blade position.
