Thread: Looking into my first new razor

i am looking into buying my first new razor and i would like some opinions as to which way i should go. first, i am looking into the Dovo Imitation Tortoise Shell, 5/8" Carbon Steel Straight Razor. this seems like a decent entry point; i haven't read anything negative about this razor. the only thing i have really read is that i might want to consider going for the 6/8". alternatively, i am considering buying a 2 day set of JA Henckels 5/8" carbon steel razors. i am considering a 2 day set so that i can use one razor until i feel that it is loosing its edge, and i can switch to the other one that is still shave ready so i can really understand the difference and know the appropriate time to have a razor honed. i also like the idea of having an additional razor once i am know a little more accustomed to straight razor shaving.

another questions i have regards strops. i was thinking of buying a new performa strop, but they don't have the linen strop on the reverse side, and suggest using a paste on the opposite side. i have read that i shouldn't use any pastes since i am new. does anyone have a suggestion as to whether i should go with the performa or another type? i appreicate all of the assistance.

I have the 5/8 special - I'm a newbie and I love it. I bought it pre-honed and its awesome.

the reviews here and and badger and blade convinced me to got for it. at less than 100 bux its a great entry point.

did you buy it used? the cheapest i could find a new one was around $110-120.

Hi rabbit, I managed to find a brand new one for 86 bucks.That was on ebay, can't remember the name.Colonel ichabod or something.It is a very wise choice for your first new razor.After being honed properly, it is one of my best shavers.

If you want to go a little less $$ this Dovo here will cut the whiskers and it comes pre honed. Not as fancy but it will do the job. Whatever you get make sure it is pre honed by a reputable honemiester. SRP vendors and some members will do a first rate job.

i bought it new from SRD for $99. Looks like the price for the 5/8 is up by $10 since I bought mine.

There are a few other options for straight razors. Have you looked in the classifieds? You will find some very good razors there that are shave ready. Plus, they are quite a bit less expensive. Not trying to discourage you from buying a nice Dovo. Rather, letting you get a good straight razor to start this adventure. You will not be getting junk. Our members have reputation to protect. I have a nice Dovo, but it's an antique "Doffen Schmied". I also have a very nice Geo. Wostenholm& Sons and a Wester Bros antique razors that provide absolutely wonderful shaves. Not even sure I want to buy a new one at this time.
