I've finally got the microscope I ordered. I'm still figuring out how to use it but I've already taken 2 shots, 1 at 10X and 1 at 200X. These images are from my Mastro Livi after 3 uses and a little stropping.

Which Microscope did you buy, and are you using Vista???? I want one of these badly but heard they don't work with Vista....
Thanks in advance for your response
The box says "Digimicro". Got it off ebay. It's the same as ebay no 260366367973.
Are you nuts? :D
This one says it works with vista. In the ebay description and in the manual here. The thing is, I dont know anybody who uses Vista, or I'd have them check for you.
Thank you Sir will check it out !!!!
Well, you oil your blades, I can tell that much...:)
Those pictures look pretty nice and show plenty of detail.
I'm not sure, it looks a bit as if the Maestro uses a double bevel of some kind. Could be convexing form the CrO he uses.
How does that baby shave, if I may ask?
I'm accustomed to looking at edges with stereoscope at 40X magnification. I'm not sure how to interpret this pictures.
If you remove the oil, you'll be able to get a more even view of the bevel side.
Seems like a very nice buy for the money.
Bart.
is that water on the edge? seems to make it really hard to tell what's happening.
wow, that's a really clean pic at 200x. Makes me want one!
Oh THAT'S what that is :gaah: - I totally forgot I oiled it before I put it back in the box!
It doesnt feel as sharp as yours or hi_bud_gl's, but the shave is very comfortable, feels easy and smooth on the skin. I havent used it in 2 weeks as I wanted to wait for the microscope to take a pic of the edge with as new a razor as possible. I'll wipe the oil off and take more pics and then shave with it again.
Me neither! LOL Is that even 200? - I think so, but I'm not sure. Will have to play with it some more. The manual is 3 pages and the software doesnt have a help file!
Just played a little more with it and found the digital zoom. Used it to get a better focus on the very edge.
Edit: sorry for the badly lit pic, I forgot I put the daylight lamp away. Kind of late here (3:30 am!)
Is the zoom on that model variable? From the specs on the ads it would appear that 10X and 200X are the only options and there is nothing in between.
Guys, Other than it's cool, Why do we need to see that much detail, Just curious. I'm looking and thinking, Man, do I really want to see that much detail? For honing blades and normal use what's the deal with 200+ magnification? What are you looking for? I'm curious about it. I'd get one myself, but I'd have to at least justify it to myself.....:hmmm:
That's just outstanding! Crystal clear pics and they're on your PC where you can save and post them. I think 60X to maybe 100X is all your average shaver/honer needs but if you're interested with what's going on with the metal then you got it. I use my RS hand held to see how I did on honing and to look for micro chips and the like. It's a pain to use, about half the time I can't see so well, and I can't save anything for making comparisons with different techniques or equipment or over time or to show someone else. That's why I'd love to have one of those.
thats way nicer then mty QX5 shots
i wish i could get better MP but still be on the cheap
The last blade pic looks like it was cut with an Oxygen / Acetylene torch. Nice though.
actually due to the oil i can't see anything that matters on these pictures.
i use microscope with 100 magnification and it's straightforward to tell which hone to use and when you're done with it.
it is not necessary at all. unless you have no idea when honing what the problem is.
I wasn't aware that those even existed. That's very cool & i want one! I might find i'm happier not knowing how my honing looked up that close though. Before i'd be thinking "Smooth" & after "Looks like a saw blade"!
I need one as well... thanks!
Maarten
It seems that all I can get is either 10X or 200X, yes.
From the wording of the description I bought it from, just like the back of the box Navaja posted, it would appear that any magnification ratio between 10 and 200 can be had, since it says "10X to 200X" and not "10X and 200X" or "10X or 200X".
IMO the 10X is insufficient and the 200X is too detailed to give any worthwhile indication as to the next best honing step, just like gugi said. I'll try and see if varying the distance to the blade helps, will post the pics and let the pros here comment and take it from there. Thank you for all the help and comments, guys!
How about this? Is this more the like the kind of magnification we're looking for?
Those shots are pretty good, much better than I get using a microscope adapter on my camera (lighting is my problem.) For the price those USB microscopes are fantastic. Have to be careful which you buy, the specs vary a lot.
BTW don't bother with digital zoom except for getting a convenient sized live picture. All it does is crop the image then resize using interpolation, it doesn't reveal any more detail (if anything it loses some.) You are better off cropping and resizing in a graphics package.
Microscopes! Ha!
When dealing with a problem blade I prefer to star at it for like twenty minutes, then exhaust every trick I know to get it to hone, then get really angry and then do stupid things. :P
Like my Frederick Reynolds quarter hollow, the previous owner apparently had some thing about the back side of the blade where he didn't like to hone too close to the heal, so the spine was still super thick there and the normal over time worn down everywhere else. My answer? Grind down the spine to make it even. The problem, one huge spot of hone wear looks a little odd and it's hard to be so precise. My solution, keep grinding until it's a nice even true wedge. After about 16 hours and four sheets of 80 grit paper, I'm about halfway there.
Like I say, I like to get angry and do really stupid things. After I'm done with it, I'll likely be so disgusted with how long I wasted on it I won't hone it for months. :P
Me, too. It also makes bevel problems easier to see and diagnose.
OT: You guys need to know something about Windows Vista...If you play the Windows Vista Installation CD backwards, it'll play Satanic messages. Even worse, if you play it forward, it'll install Windows Vista.
You're of course right about what you're saying about the digital zoom. It's much better to get the pic and then open it real size in an image editing program and take what you need than losing resolution by using the digital zoom.
The reason I used it is that it allows me to fine tune the focus: I get a sharper image by setting the focus on a zoomed in image and then removing the zoom than by not using any zoom at all. I'm not using the digital zoom to get a larger image: I have photoshop :)
do any of these cheap usb microscopes work on a mac osx?
Hey welcome to SRP. Don't let that worry you. Jump in with both feet, you'll be glad you did. Here is the SRP Wiki with loads of info to get you started right. :tu
Just an observation - I've been looking into buying one of these, and it seems the magnification values are misleading. They seem to be saying that if you view the image on a 15 inch screen, the magnification is 200x. That is VERY different from magnifying 200x then capturing the image!
So what you are looking at is a field of view 15/200 inch diagonally, or 0.075" = 1.9mm.
Which is OK, but the manufacturers are using a bit of spin to exagerate the quality.:nono:
I was looking at these and there seems to be a 400x one for only £10 more. Would that be too much for razors? Maybe you could move it further away for less magnification?
The reason I am considering buying one is not razor related but it would be nice to kill 2 birds with one microscope :p
You know what would be really awesome.....if some one with a microscope could post examples of overhoned edges, microchips, different stages in the honing process, warped edges, etc. If you have the time and the resources. I think it would help me understand some things better. Thanks.
This is hilarious. My attitude is exactly the same. That's why for this straight razor business I really need to go against what's ingrained on my DNA and take deep breaths, relax, and stay calm.
As I said in an earlier post, in my life it's rare that I ever do anything gently.
