Thanked: 21Thanks for the info. I am going to try adding a steamed towel into the mix as well. Seems like everytime I got a nice shave from a barber, they put a steamed towel on my face for 5 minutes or so.

Thanked: 1212All great advice. One small remark, though...
You can't overstrop, period. Not if you do it right. One of the most respected members of SRP did extensive stropping tests once, and he found that 60 laps was enough to get the maximum benefit out of the strop.
Ever since reading that, I have relied on 20 laps linen and 60 laps leather prior to a shave. It works very well.
On the side-burn goatee issue: I can see how it could be problematic if you have a wide goatee and wide sideburns, leaving only a narrow strip to shave. The only real solution to that is asking one of the razor craftsmen on the forum to customize a razor for you by shortening the blade. Or to order one custom make from on of the razor makers. In the mean time you could consider adjusting your beard model a bit, so the strip to be shaved would be somewhat wider.
Best regards,
Bart.

Yes, as far as we know the guys who hone classicshaving's razors are one of the most experienced ones.
Of course not all razors are made equal either, but I think with the right preparation and technique any decent razor should be able to do a reasonable job on any beard.

Welcome aboard, Captain. I have 2 Dovos I got from CS and they definitely arrived shave ready. My standard stropping is 30 linen and 60 leather. Some folks with really tough beards have to strop again in the middle of a shave. Jockeys has a pair of shaving videos that might help.

He doesn't have a goatee, but he has long sideburns. The vids may help with your sideburn / goatee problem.
Enjoy! It just keeps getting better.

+1 with nun2sharp it is more than likley your technique i ordered my first from vintage and it was honed by the famous lynn and i got a not so great shave it takes a week or more to get comfortable with the blade and keeping the right angle read all the wikis on shaving and proper stropping and give it some time. when you do get it right you will be amazed how comfortable the shave will be
