Thanked: 0San Diego?
I am a female trying to learn how to do a straight razor shave on men in San Diego, CA. I have been trying to find someone to help coach me, but it seems like either I cannot find anyone who can actually do a decent straight razor shave or I find people who act like its some big secret. ( I am so excited to find this forum!) I went to school to be a barber, but everyone knows how much you actually learn in school, right? Especially, since not a lot of places offer the shave anymore due to sanitation reasons. Anyhow, Does anyone know ANYONE in sunny San Diego that would be willing to help a girl out? I know that I will learn a great deal on this forum but... I need all the help I can get.
Right now, I am using disposable blades. I was told in school that it was state law. I am also using a hot lather machine, The Art of Shaving products, and lots of other stuff. Honestly, I have everything. I just need some skills!
If someone knows any good books, DVD's, ANYTHING will help. I am very eager to learn.
Thanks,
BossLady

welcome to srp
you may want to visit the ladie's corner. i'm thinking you should be able to pick up some skills by shaving your legs for example.
i'm thinking that most of us here shave ourselves not other people, so that's not the same. i'm on the other end of the country, or i'd have volunteered getting a few shaves from you.

Thanked: 328Classicshaving.com isn't that far from you. Just a little north, they might be able to offer some assistance? There's also a Barbers school in downtown SD that I got a shave at.. They were ok.. Not superb, but ok.. Mabye enough to get you going in the right direction.

Do you have any friends/ test rats that will not get upset over a little nick? If so, after practicing on your legs and reading up on the wiki, maybe some brave souls will give you a chance to get some practice... then I'd do exactly what Lynn says and start with the sideburns for a few times, then progress as you (or your test subjects) get comfortable.

Baloons
I just remembered what a couple of old barber friends told me about barber school (in the late 60s). They practiced shaving ballons. They lathered the baloons and shaved them. It will teach you to use a light touch. Oh, and both barbers were women.
