Thanked: 0Norton 4k 8k Question?
Hi I was just curious if you should use an x pattern on the norton 4k 8k combo stone or if you should just go back and forth keeping it straight. So far I have been using an x pattern which is harder and takes more time to get a lot of passes in. I realized the stone, however, is wide enough to encompass the whole blade on its surface. I was wondering if it's ok to just keep the razor straight and do it, perhaps someone has done this and it works well for so I was just curious. Also I was wondering if it's ok to go from using an x pattern on the stone to start honing it straight instead? Any suggestions? thanks

Thanked: 3795This is a constant question, so you are in good company. I got into a running debate with ProfessorShak about this. A lot of it was by PMs but one of the threads is here. Another is here.
There are lots of threads about the x-pattern. I just remember these because I was in the thick of them.
Regarding your question, there likely isn't any harm switching between the x-pattern and a straight stroke. I don't really see any harm. You just want to make sure that the hone is cutting into the full length of the blade during some part of the stroke.

x pattern
what has been said before me is correct.I like to add only 1 more information.if you are going to use x pattern you will have to turn your stone very often(not opposite side ).in this case wear of the stone will be same all over the stone.
good luck

Thanked: 13245Assuming that the edge is straight and even......
You can do straight strokes or slightly heel forward strokes down the hone without the X pattern... The best solution is probably what Utopian already posted is the mixed pattern... Again if the edge is STRAIGHT !!!

Thanked: 4942I have been using the Norton 4K/8K Combo for over 8 years and find that the X pattern has always cut very consistently for me. Unless I am working on an old dog of a razor, I usually do not do more than 10 or 15 strokes at one time on either the 4K or 8K side working in pyramids and down in strokes from there ie, 5-5-1 as the heavy work and bevel setting is done with the 220K and 1K. I really tend to look for repeatable results and the X pattern has always produced that for me with any stone I have used. Nothing scientific, just a lot of razors.
