    Default First Shave

Just had my first shave with a Solingen straight razor bought from ebay. Bought it some time ago, but was waiting to get a strop before I used it, and recently got a travel strop paddle type from ebay.

Anyway, what a nerve wracking experience. Gave myself a shave (very very carefully) and it's as good as the normal double edged safety razor I usually use. I fully expect it to surpass the double edge once I've become more proficient and less nervous.

One slight nick in the form of a horizontal line across my left cheek where I was defining the edge of my sideburn, but I will wearthe nick as a badge of honour

    Jonesy

    P.S. I'm Hooked!

Congratulations on your first shave Jonesy.

It seems you did a great job! I didnt do a complete shave the first times. Just don't get too confident.. and you will do just great.

    Have fun!

Congrats, man!! There's not one of us "veteran" shavers who don't have the occasional nick. You mentioned something about waiting for a strop, but nothing about honing. Was it "shave ready" when you received it?

If you did a complete shave and only gave yourself one nick you are off to an amazing start! Congrats!

Yes, bought it 'shave ready' from a guy on ebay who renovates razors. My next purchase will be a hone when I get my head around the various grades of hone.

I recently bought a dovo razor that was not sharp ready. I did strop it. And shaved with it. Had very few minor nicks. I have another razor i just got that is SUPPOSEDLY shave ready. I stropped it and i tore myself up. Used the same technique as before. I just dont understand what happened.

This phenomenon is usually caused by one or all of three things...poor prep, improper blade angle, or too much pressure. Your switching from a barely able to shave razor to a scary sharp one just magnified the errors. Happens to all of us at first. Just keep at it concentrating on those three things and I promise it WILL get better.
