Thanked: 0Norton 4k 8k honing?
Hi I was curious what it means when My razor kind of sticks on the 8k side like it will catch, but not a grinding noise like it's catching on a nick. It slides very smooth on the 4k side and when I do a few strokes on the 8k it starts to stick and I feel like I have to kind of force it through the stroke even though I'm doing it very lightly. Does anybody know what this means?

Thanked: 953do you need more water on the 8k? are you washing off the swarf (metal blackening on the hone)?

Is it sticking with the razor flat on the surface? If it is, it sounds like a bit of suction on the hone. I find honing on the 8k to be VERY different than on the 4k, it feels kinda like honing on honey to me...I'm not sure if this is the feeling you're describing, but if it is it doesn't sound like anything to worry about.

Does it start sticking the minute you start on the 8k or does it develope after a few laps? Normally on the 8k when it starts feeling like you're honing in honey it means you're getting close to as many laps as the blade needs. Depending on how good a job you did on the 4k this could happen in as few as 10 laps.
Some stones (Shaptons in particular) are more sticky than others. For me the best way to compensate for this is to decrease the angle of the blade to the hone...instead of laying the blade down perpendicular I angle it with the heel leading at somewhere around a 45 degree angle. You could also experiment with the amount of water on the hone.

Thanked: 13I used to have exactly the same problem with my 8k side. Though mine felt like there were alterations between stickyness and non-stickyness (if that makes any sense). For a while I thought it was just me honing that was incorrect. Then, I lapped about 1/8th inch off the 8k side, and lapped it upto about 800grit, and it has got rid of the problem.
Might work for you?
