Thread: Ceramic Hone?

I was curious I have a norton 4k 8k stone. I can't seem to get my razor sharp enough, which I know it should but it doesn't seem to work. I bout this little ultra fine ceramic stone that's only like a half to 3/4 of an inch wide by about 4 inches long. It is definitely finer than the 8k side of the norton. I was wondering should I take it to that ultra fine stone after the 8k? Might that help? Any suggestions?

I don't know how tough your beard is , but during my first year of straight shaving my finest grit hone was the 8K . Did you give the razor a good stropping ? You should be able to get a decent edge from the 8K , if you can't , the bevel on the edge may not be right . Is this razor new or old ? If it's old you may need the 1K hone to establish a good bevel on the edge . If it's a new razor maybe you need to refine the bevel on the 4K before you go to the 8K . The 8K will give you a decent shaving edge , although it may feel a little scratchy until you strop the hell out of the razor . Of course a finer grit hone will give you a smoother edge .

I'd say chances are it won't give you sharper edge, especially if it's finer than the norton.
But if it's as fine as you say you can give it a try and verify for yourself - it's not going to affect the edge all that much at all.
Using hone blindly is very counterproductive. You want to know where your edge is at and tackle the task at hand accordingly.

Unless you have a very unusual razor,which is possible you should be able to get your razor sharp enough with the Norton to give you a very presentable shave. The answer isn't to keep trying more hones it's to learn how to get the most from the Norton. Then you can move on and experiment.

I concur on all accounts...the norton should be sufficient to get a great shave!

I only had an 8-9k ceramic hone for my first year of straight shaving.
