Hi Folks
My name is Steve. I just wanted to post up and introduce myself after having lurked through so much useful information.
I've been shaving with a straight razor since the end of December. I started with a shave ready Wapienica and that first shave was really very good. Then, alas, on the second shave, I nicked the blade on the faucet. So, I bought some hones and got it back to a point where it shaved nicely, not as sharp as it was, but nice enough, and then I nicked it again! And I missed some lather in the scales and found a good spot of corrosion on the blade. That poor razor has suffered much more at my hands than I have using it. I've brought it back, functionally, if not cosmetically, but I'm not certain how good the bevel is and I can't quite get it as sharp as I know it was.
I also have a Fromm Eagle which I'd purchased as a teen some 23 or 24 years ago. I'd actually managed to shave with it back then, with no real instruction or clear idea how to strop it - mostly because I didn't have much beard at the time. It stayed home when I joined the service and my parents eventually shipped it to me when I got out. It sat unused in a drawer until recently. I've managed to hone it to a point where it shaves but, again, I don't think it's as sharp as it could be.
I've largely avoided injury and my shaves are about as close and comfortable as with the disposable, more so on the good days. Lately, I've felt like I've hit a plateau so I ordered another shave ready razor - a vintage Devry B.S. co. Aristocrat from Madaspen. It should arrive in a day or so and hopefully it'll provide a good a bench mark. I'm planning on upgrading to a higher end strop at some point also.
So, that's about it. This is a great site and the information in it has been invaluable to me. Hopefully I'll be able to contribute.
Thanks,
-Steve

welcome steve.
if you don't mind spending the time and effort you should be able to get that wapi fairly nice again. just some sandpaper and metal polish.
as far as honing it it's probably a more challenging task but if you want to do it you'll find plenty of help here.

Welcome!
That's too bad about those razors you nicked, it's amazing how fragile the razors can be, isn't it? With more practice you'll be getting shaves better than with your disposable, not just as good. It sounds to me like before long you'll be a full-fledged razor addict like so many of us here! If you didn't already check it out, look at the wiki on the page, it's full of great information especially if you're still learning.
