Thanked: 5French Ivory?
Hi Guy's,
Could someone please enlighten me to the meaning of the term"French Ivory"? Is this to say that these are ivory scales that have been worked in France? Or is it just an arty way of say ing that they are Faux ivory?
Thanks!

Thanked: 3164Hello Nobby!
Like you surmised, it is/was just a fancy way of saying fake ivory. It was made from celluloid and grained to look a bit like the real thing, but the graining is a bit too uniform and there is a kind of cross-hatching you can sometimes see in real ivory that isn't present in faux ivory, also known as Ivorine. "Faux" sounds a bit better than plain old "fake" doesn't it?!
Regards,
Neil

Reminds me a few years ago of car commercials. I think it was Ricardo Montalban advertising Chrysler cars and talking about the rich corinthian leather in the car. It was vinyl. same with French ivory. Just celluloid.
